
George Henry Borrow was an English author who wandered around Europe and the UK, writing novels and travelogues based on his experiences. He was born on 5th July 1803, at East Dereham, in Norfolk. He was educated at Norwich grammar school and Edinburgh High School. Although he studied law, it was languages and literature that became his main interests.
He set off on his first major European tour in 1825, when he walked through France and Germany. He later visited Russia, Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
He married Mary Clarke in 1840, who was a widow with a grown up daughter. They had a small estate in Suffolk.
In 1844, he visited Istanbul, but thereafter only travelled within the UK, walking through Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Wales. His first visit to wales began at Llangollen on 27th July 1854. After touring throughout various parts of Wales, he finally left for london on 16th november 1854. He kept a daily journal of his tour and this resulted in the production of a book called "Wild Wales", written in 1862.
