Getta and Gwen Jones 1930

Getta and Gwen Jones

Getta (sometimes known as Maggie) Jones, once had a sweet shop on the main road at Garnant. The premises, known as Mountain View was at the end of the terrace, two doors away from the current Garnant Post Office.

Getta's sweet shop was once owned by Thomas Michael and was also the birthplace of his son William Michael who became a Covent Garden Opera Singer.

When Getta broke her leg, her resourcefulness became apparent when she turned an everyday sweeping brush upside down and used it as a crutch, enabling her to continue to get around. She is remembered for the pretty flowers and butterflies which she enjoyed making from beads and wire. She would then give her little creations to the local children who were happy to receive them.

Advert for Getta's shop in 1922.
