Tyllwyd Colliery:A Coal Pit north of Horney Road (now known as Folland Road), Glanamman and South of Tyllwyd Farm. A map dated 1881 shows a chimney and an air shaft at the location. A nearby reservoir shown on a later map (dated 1905) is not however shown on the 1881 map. The reservoir served to provide water for the Raven Tinplate works and pipes once crossed Folland Road, across the River Amman to the tinplate site. It is uncertain when Tyllwyd Colliery started, but it was being worked as early as 1880 by Newman and Smith. Its location is shown on maps dating to at least 1905 when it was marked as "Old Pit". The same 1905 map shows a drift mine in the immediate vicinity to the East of the old pit. South of Glyndreinog Market Garden on the opposite side of Folland Road, the word "Colliery" is also marked. It is likely that this drift mine was known locally as Aberfflach Colliery. A fatal accident occurred on 24th of November 1903, when William Jones, a Banksman at Tyllwyd Colliery was crushed to death when his clothes became caught in machinery. In 1913, the owners were Messrs T. D. Jones and Co. The 21st of August 1913 edition of the Amman Valley Chronicle reported that the company were taken to court by 24 of its employees over a wages dispute. The court found in favour of the employees, but made no ruling on the compensation to be paid, instead, leaving it open to negotiation between the two sides' solicitors. The negotiations were not altogether successful and resulted in the Company again being taken to court. During the original proceedings, T. D. Jones testified that Mrs Jones was the sole owner! When Tyllwyd colliery ceased operating is uncertain, but a colliery of the same name was reputedly worked by J. D. Rees in 1932 and L. J. Lewis in 1955. The location of Tyllwyd Pit is now a small wood but evidence of coal mining can be seen by the uneven nature of the terrain and the coal slag which forms the ground beneath the fallen leaves.
